Fitter than Average Lawyers

On 21 May 2010 CWJ entered four teams to take part in a Global Corporate Challenge to 'walk around the world'.  The challenge, which lasted for sixteen weeks, involved the seven members from each team wearing a pedometer everyday to record how many steps they took in their day to day lives.  At the end of each day, the steps recorded would be uploaded to a website and the distance travelled around the world updated.

Research has suggested that an average office worker only walks around 3,500 steps a day.  Therefore, the daily aim for each team member was to record 10,000 steps.  With some fierce but friendly rivalry between the four CWJ teams, the participants took the challenge in their stride and tried to clock up as many steps as possible.

As a modern law firm with a reputation for being 'dynamic, enthusiasitc, young and not stuffy', all of our teams found they were easily achieving the target of 10,000 steps a day.  In fact, the competition to be the best team in CWJ pushed the average step count towards a respectable 16,000 steps a day.

The top team from CWJ finished the challenge with an average of 15878 steps per day.  CWJ's top two teams finished first and second out of all the teams competing in the UK legal industry.  Unfortunately, in the international competition between teams in the legal industry, our top team very narrowly missed out on a place on the podium to three Australian firms.

During the 16 weeks of the challenge, the 28 participants from CWJ:

  • Took a total of 41,556,519 steps;
  • Walked a total distance of 16,526 miles;
  • Burned an additional 3941 hamburgers worth of calories
  • Had an average step count of 13,370 steps.
