Jo Denny a solicitor in the family law team of Clarkson Wright & Jakes LLP spent 2 weeks recently working at a children's centre in Uganda.
Jo commented;
"It was a fantastic 2 weeks working at the children's centre, getting to know all the kids and finding out how the centre works on a day to day basis. It is still in it's early stages and only five of the 40 houses on this site have been built housing approximately 40 children at the moment. The older children attend local schools, but currently the younger children are educated on site. The Kindergarten is one of the next projects to start, with the aim of being finished before Christmas. In the meantime a temporary wooden kindergarten has been built. We were given the job of painting the temporary building to make it much more children friendly.
It turned out to be quite hard work with sanding, undercoating and then painting. This took the majority of our two weeks at the centre, especially seeing as the kids wanted a lot of our time to play! We also arranged a 3 day Children's camp during which we took the younger ones swimming, many for the first time in their lives. There was a mixture of screaming and laughter!
It was an amazing experience and very difficult to leave the children behind. Having seen the level of poverty across the country the work they are doing is incredible. The children are given a new life and opportunities they would never have had. Over the next year they hope to build another five houses as well as the kindergarten and constantly need support until, as is hoped, the centre will become partly self sufficient".
Jo managed to raise £450 all to go towards the good work being done for the children in Uganda.
