£80,000 Compensation for Cyclist Hit by Van

A woman who was hit by a van as she cycled to work has won compensation of £80,000 for the life-changing injuries she suffered in the accident.

The woman, then 61, had been cycling along a busy road and had turned off at a junction when the collision occurred. The van hit the back of her bicycle and she was thrown onto the bonnet, hitting the windscreen.

The woman was left with fractured vertebrae in her spine. She underwent hospital treatment and then received intense physiotherapy at a rehabilitation centre. She suffered from positional vertigo, which causes a sensation of extreme dizziness, for some time after the accident and also experienced psychological trauma. She has not ridden a bicycle since the accident.

She returned to work with amended duties, but after three years her employment was terminated on ill-health grounds.

The payout will compensate her for her injuries and the distress she suffered, and for the resulting loss of earnings.
