Carpenter Wins Compensation for TV Studio Injury

An experienced carpenter who fell and was injured whilst carrying out work in the ITV studio in London from which 'This Morning' is broadcast has won £10,000 in compensation.

Work was being carried out to convert what used to be a store room at the premises into a space for use by the TV presenters. Other contractors had dug a trench in the floor and left it uncovered. The 60-year-old carpenter alerted the studio manager to the potential health and safety hazard, but nothing was done.

While the programme was on air, the carpenter continued with his own work, in the course of which he tripped and fell into the trench, suffering a torn cartilage in his right knee. The tear required two operations but has failed to heal fully and requires constant strapping. As a result of his injury, he no longer works full time and is unable to take part in hobbies such as playing football.

When he first raised the matter, ITV tried to deny that the accident had happened. The company then attempted to place the blame for his injuries on the carpenter himself, but he was able to provide witnesses to support his account of what had taken place and succeeded in his personal injury claim against the company.
