Grandfather Compensated for Life-Changing Leg Injury

A former production fitter from Manchester has secured compensation after he suffered a serious leg injury when he was hit by a motorcycle that failed to stop at a red light.

The 67-year-old grandfather suffered serious fractures to his right leg that required several operations and plastic surgery. As a result of his injury, he developed osteomyelitis, an infection that can result if there is a deep cut and bacteria spreads to the bone. It can be very painful, with tenderness over the affected area of the bone and a general feeling of being unwell and fever as the infection develops. On rare occasions, surgical intervention is needed if the infection persists and does not respond to any other treatment.

At first, doctors feared that the infected limb would have to be amputated. However, the need for this was avoided after he underwent further surgery to remove a section of the bone and insert steel rods, pins and wires. An external fixation device was used to keep the bones in his leg stabilised and in alignment.

It was many months before he was mobile again and he also suffered nightmares and flashbacks to the accident. He was diagnosed as suffering from psychological trauma and required a coordinated package of treatment for his physical and psychological injuries.

The accident has had an enormous impact on his daily life. He was forced to retire from a job he loved and can no longer pursue many of his hobbies. Daily tasks and even playing with his grandchildren are difficult for him.

An undisclosed settlement in compensation was agreed once the full extent of the man's treatment needs was known.

The motorcyclist was subsequently convicted of driving without due care and attention.
