A 72-year-old great-grandmother from Lancashire has won £3,500 in compensation from her tour operator after she was struck down with a severe gastric illness on a 'dream' family holiday to Egypt.
Kathleen Smith was on holiday with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter at MinaMark Beach Resort at Hurghada, on the Red Sea. Two days after their arrival, she began suffering with stomach cramps, diarrhoea and lethargy. She was so ill that she had to be put on an intravenous drip in her room at the hotel and her symptoms persisted throughout her stay.
Mrs Smith attributed her illness to poor hygiene standards at the hotel, claiming that food was left uncovered and exposed to flies.
On her return home, she was treated for acute gastroenteritis by her GP.
Mrs Smith pursued a personal injury claim against the tour operator, Thomas Cook, and obtained £3,500 in compensation.
