Probate charges to be increased for larger estates

Proposals to change the cost of being granted probate over an estate are due to come into force in April 2019. Currently, an individual applying for probate on an estate over £5,000 in England and Wales will pay £215 in fees, or £155 if applying through a solicitor.

However, under the new rules the fee will no longer be fixed and will instead vary depending on the value of the Deceased's estate. While estates worth less than £50,000 will not have to pay a fee, those with larger estates worth £2 million or more will have to pay £6,000.
