In 2010 the Tribunal Service reported an increase from the previous year of 56% in the number of employment claims submitted against employers, with the highest award of compensation being £729,347, for a disability discrimination case.
Given the economic uncertainty and the proposed deep cuts in the public sector, which will in turn have a knock on effect on the private sector, it is very likely that with limited prospects or re-employment for redundant employees, there will be a further increase in the number of tribunal claims against employers in 2011-2012, particularly with the removal of the default retirement age.
