A glittering event at the Warren, Metropolitan Police Social Club, Hayes, on Thursday 17th October celebrated the winners of the annual Bromley Business Awards, organised by Prospects Business Support in association with main sponsor London Biggin Hill Airport.

Before an audience of 150 guests LBC radio presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer hosted the Oscar-style award ceremony.

Named as Bromley Business of the Year – an award chosen by the judging panel from among the winners of the other 11 categories – was FLR Spectron Ltd, which also won the Best Employer and Staff Development and the Best Medium Sized Business Awards.

Director of the Orpington-based mobile telecoms company Pino Valenza said:

“These awards are the culmination of an amazing journey by our company. We have a fantastic team of 45 staff and they have helped us all the way. We are looking forward to continued growth and development.”

The awards, now in their third year, rewarded large and small businesses from throughout the borough of Bromley and covered newcomers as well as firms that were well-established.

Holwood Farm Shop at Downe only opened a year ago specialising in local Kentish produce. Accepting the award for Best New Business, co-founder Gary Mercer said: “This is so unexpected. The chances of success for any new business are very small and we certainly hope to be back in the future.”

The guests reacted warmly when Beverley Simms Dick, manager of Queen Elizabeth House, Bromley, a residential home for the elderly, gave her reaction to winning the Best Business for Customer Service Award.

Speaking on behalf of Greensleeves Homes Trust  which runs the establishment she said: “Providing care to older people can be very hard and what we do is often not appreciated. Care homes are getting a battering at present and it is so important with this award to let our staff know that they are doing the right thing.”

Providing job chances for those starting out in the world of work is recognised by the Best Business for Apprenticeships and Employment for Young People category. Accepting the award for Courtney Erin Hair Salon, Anerleigh Roots quipped: “Thank you so much. By the way we’re in Hayes if you want to pop along!” The award is sponsored by Bromley College of Further & Higher Education.

Clearly delighted with winning two awards, as Best Small Business and Best Business for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism, Jamie McGranaghan of J’amies Gymnastics Academy, Beckenham, said:” This win will be massive for our business. Fancy being given an award because every day you wake up and love your job!”

Some 150 local companies entered this year’s competition, Sir Bob Scott, chairman of the South London Business Council which is part of Prospects Group, told the audience. He went on to thank London Biggin Hill Airport for their continued support for the event as main sponsor. “The importance of an airport to the local economy cannot be overestimated. It’s a terrific resource for the borough of Bromley, “ he said.

Robert Walters, business development manager for London Biggin Hill Airport, told the guests:

“The vision of Prospects in running these awards had enabled us to highlight and celebrate success in the business life of the borough.”

The annual Bromley Business Awards were also supported by Bromley College of Further & Higher Education, Airey Miller Partnership LLP, Clarkson, Wright & Jakes, Lloyds TSB Commercial, The Warren, and Veolia Environmental Services Ltd.
