What to Expect in your First Meeting with a Family Solicitor at Clarkson Write & Jakes

Family law is often complex, far-reaching, and emotionally charged. The deeply personal nature of these matters means they demand not only expert legal guidance but also a compassionate, empathetic, and professional approach. Taking the first step to speak to a family solicitor can feel daunting, especially when you’re going through an emotionally challenging time. Whether you’re facing a relationship breakdown, need advice on child arrangements, or are considering divorce or separation, understanding what to expect in your initial meeting can help ease some of the uncertainty.

As members of Resolution, we are committed to helping clients avoid unnecessary conflict by promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods where appropriate. Our goal is to reach amicable solutions that work for everyone involved. We strive to manage each case in a way that minimises conflict and stress (particularly for children) ensuring a more constructive and respectful approach for all parties.

Understandably, reaching out to a family solicitor can feel overwhelming but we’re here to support you every step of the way. Ultimately, our clients should leave their first meeting with a sense of clarity, armed with knowledge of their options and a clear strategy moving forward.

The aim of this article is to guide you through what to expect during your first meeting with us and offer practical steps to ensure you get the most out of it.

Prior to the meeting:

Before your meeting, we will ask you to complete a SmartSearch ID check. This is a simple process done via your mobile phone, requiring you to submit a selfie and a picture of your ID.

Additionally, you are required to complete a questionnaire tailored to the specific issue you are seeking advice on. The more detailed your answers, the better advice we can provide. The questionnaire should be filled out in plenty of time prior to your meeting and sent to one of our legal assistants to ensure your solicitor has ample time to review it.

Ultimately, by providing us with as much information as possible, you will ensure that your initial meeting is as productive and helpful as possible.

What to expect during your meeting:

The initial consultation typically lasts one hour, allowing ample time to discuss your situation, review any documents you have brought with you, and explore your options moving forwards. Your solicitor will discuss possible outcomes and the next steps, including the process involved and a rough estimate of costs.

There is no need to worry about legal jargon as everything will be explained in easy-to-understand terms, so you won’t be left feeling confused!

Below are some Top Tips to help you get the most out of your meeting:

  1. Make sure you bring any relevant documents or paperwork, including a valuation or appraisal of your property. It would also be helpful to bring a valuation of your pension(s) if available.
  2. Be open and honest – The more transparent you are the better advice and support we can offer.
  3. Prepare a list of any questions you would like answered during the meeting.
  4. Bring a friend or family member if you prefer.

After the meeting:

Ultimately, by the end of your meeting, we hope you feel informed and empowered with a clear understanding of your options and next steps. Following the consultation, we will send you a Letter of Advice which details everything discussed in the meeting, including:

  • Our advice based on the information provided including your legal rights and options available to you
  • The legal process
  • An estimate of costs
  • A relevant timescale
