Costs of NHS Maternity Care Claims Revealed

Figures published in NHS Resolution's annual report for the year to 31 March 2025 show the cost of maternity-related clinical negligence claims against the NHS.

Clinical negligence claims relating to maternity care totalled £3.5 billion in 2024/25, representing 53 per cent of the value of all notified clinical negligence claims. There were 1,286 maternity care claims, representing 11.2 per cent of all claims brought. The lifelong harm caused by injuries at birth means the average value of maternity care claims is higher.

A total of £1.3 billion was paid out in respect of maternity care claims, or 42 per cent of all clinical negligence payments. Of the total provision for clinical negligence claims, £37.5 billion, or 62 per cent, relates to maternity.

The Government recently announced a national investigation into NHS maternity and neonatal services.
