A settlement has been secured for a former plumber who was diagnosed with mesothelioma decades after being exposed to asbestos.
The man had been employed by a council from 1977 to 1986. He worked in council-owned properties and his tasks included stripping asbestos lagging from water tanks and pipework, working in service ducts containing asbestos-lagged pipes and working with asbestos insulation boards and flue pipes.
In 2023 he began experiencing shortness of breath. The following year he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer that most commonly affects the lining of the lungs and is almost always caused by asbestos exposure. He had to give up his job as a school caretaker.
He commenced a claim against the council, which admitted liability. A substantial settlement was agreed, which includes sums to provide care for his disabled wife if he is no longer able to do so. He will be able to seek additional compensation to pay for any further treatment he needs.
