A woman who was seriously injured when she used a faulty Pilates machine at a gym has obtained substantial compensation.
The support bar on the machine gave way while she was using it. She was thrown forward and briefly lost consciousness. She suffered a broken elbow, severe abdominal injuries and long-term nerve damage. Since the accident she has undergone several operations, and she now has to use a wheelchair for even modest distances. A concert violinist, she had to cancel a number of performances.
She brought a claim against the gym where the accident happened. Although the gym initially denied that it was responsible, an interim payment of £250,000 was successfully obtained.
After further evidence in support of her claim was presented, the gym agreed to a settlement. The amount of compensation she has secured was described as 'very substantial'.
